Clematis Pruning Guide

Clematis Group One : Flowers January - May

Group One consists of the evergreen and early flowering forms, such as cirrhosa and armandii, as well as the alpina, montana and macropetala types.

  1. Flowers appear on short stalks directly from the leaf axil bud on stems ripened the previous season.
  2. After flowering, new growth is produced that will ripen before winter.
  3. Flowers will appear from these buds the following season.

Prune After Flowering

  • Trim plants to fit space
  • Remove any damaged/dead growth
  • Growth is produced for following season
